On 10th December, 1914, the 2nd Yorkshire Light Infantry battalion of 13 Brigade, 5th Division left their billets in St Jans Cappel and moved to trenches east of Lindenhoek, a few miles south of Ypres where they remained until relieved on 14th December. The opposing trenches here were very close to each other, only 50 yards apart in some places, and the main danger came from sniper fire rather that shell fire. They were back in these same trenches from 19th -22nd December during which time 6 men were killed and 11 wounded, all as a result of sniper fire. George Garbutt died from wounds on 19th December but the exact date on which he was wounded is not known. |
